Position Description

Title: Director of Christian Education
Job Summary:

Responsible for the direction and oversight of educational ministry of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Germantown in a part-time position averaging generally 15 hours per week.

Reports to: Generally, the Christian Discipleship Ministry Team with supervision by the Senior Pastor

Job Responsibilities:

  • Guide the educational/discipleship ministries of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Germantown by serving as a staff person to the Christian Discipleship (CD) Ministry Team.
  • Assist the CD Ministry Team in all aspects of providing a holistic ministry of Christian nurture by helping with the planning for the total program, with identifying leaders for various programs, and with selecting appropriate curriculum resources.
  • Serve as a resource person for church school teachers and other Christian education leaders.
  • Give special priority to planning for, resourcing, and training leadership in additional meetings for children, youth and adults.
    • Facilitate the promotion of presbyterial and denominational programs for children and youth (summer camps, youth retreats, rallies, etc.) to leaders and parents.
    • Provide for periodic training and support for teachers and leaders.
  • Be informed about new methodologies and resources for Christian nurture and help the CD Ministry Team see and evaluate trends.
    • Assist the CD Ministry Team in planning special educational ministries, such as church membership classes, seasonal programs (i.e., Lent and
    • Help with the promotion of all educational ministries within the congregation (posters, mailings, newsletter articles, e-group postings, web information).
  • Assist in providing for and promoting the church library.


Job Requirements:

Education:

Degree in education or seminary degree.

Experience:

Minimum of 2 years experience in Christian education either as staff or volunteer.

Knowledge:

Has knowledge of Christian education at all levels.

Skills:

Is trained and experienced in Christian education leadership and administration.

Possesses gifts for organization and coordination and demonstrates an ability to shepherd volunteers.

Is able to communicate well and relate to all persons.

Is committed to educational ministry within the Presbyterian and Reformed tradition.


Work closely with the chair of the CD Ministry Team. Attend each meeting of the CD Ministry Team. Function as a member of the church's staff, under the supervision of the Senior Pastor.

Participate in continuing education events.

Two paid 15-hour weeks per year.

The flexibility of the DCE schedule may allow for additional time off, but it is expected that the work will be done at an earlier or later time.

Holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and following Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day. (If the DCE is called to work on a holiday, another day may be substituted.)

Sick Leave: Four days per year.

No compensation for unused sick leave at the termination of employment.

Evaluation: Generally accountable to the Christian Discipleship Ministry Team with supervision by the Senior Pastor.

The DCE will be evaluated as directed by the session.

William Warren

William celebrated his 30th year as pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Germantown in September of this year. He came here from Middle Tennessee, where he served as pastor of the Dickson and Hohenwald Cumberland Presbyterian Churches. He is a graduate of Bethel College and Memphis Theological Seminary, and has earned the Doctor of Ministry degree in Christian Spirituality from Columbia Theological Seminary. William grew up in Memphis and is married to Linda Emigh, who is also a native Memphian. They have two grown sons, Will and Jacob. As a pastor his passions are preaching and Christian spirituality and formation. He enjoys relationships with family and friends, movies, walking and reading. And, after all these years, he continues to love life in this community of faith.

Claudette Pickle

Claudette Pickle is our Director of Christian Education. She attended Ohio University and graduated from the University of Memphis with a Masters of Education. Claudette taught at Brownsville Road Elementary School for almost five years before joining the staff of the Board of Christian Education of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, serving as the Coordinator of Children’s Ministry and the Consultant Program for 17 years. She then served as the Board's Executive Director for 16 years. She began serving as DCE at Germantown in January of 2009. Claudette is married to Bill Pickle; they have a son Jason who lives in Lake Tahoe, California. In addition, they have a dog named Bailey. Claudette enjoys spending time with friends, reading, traveling, cooking, and working in the yard.

Linda Warren

Linda Emigh Warren, our pianist, organist, and director of our adult's and children's choirs, graduated from Rhodes College in 1969 (it was Southwestern at Memphis at the time), with a Bachelor of Music in Church Music with a concentration in voice and organ. She has been a church musician since 1964 as soloist, organist, pianist, adult choir director, and children’s choir director. Her love of singing took her to Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony in Eureka Springs, Arkansas during her college years and shortly thereafter to perform in several operas. For three years she performed with a band in a local Memphis nightclub. Linda received her Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Memphis and has 45 hours of graduate work above her masters. She has taught music in private schools, and has taught voice and piano. She is now the music teacher at Farmington Elementary School in Germantown. Linda enjoys reading, writing and arranging music, gardening, bird watching, working crossword puzzles, walking with her dog, and being with her husband and family.

Jane David

Jane is our Administrative Assistant. She was born in Ripley, Tennessee in April 1957, and raised in Dyersburg, Tennessee from the age of 5. She graduated from Southwestern at Memphis, now known as Rhodes College, with a B. A. in history in 1980. In August of 1980, she married Gary Norwood. Since getting married, Jane and Gary have lived in Greece (3 years), Virginia (2 years), Okinawa, Japan (3 years) and Atsugi, Japan (3 years). Gary left the U. S. Navy in 1992 in time for the birth of their daughter, Laura Katharine. They moved to Memphis in 1993.
